Healthcare Has Failed Us
We are living through a culture war because we do not know how to rule ourselves, and we do not even know who our many selves are. We take a trip. Sometimes literature comes to town. The Book of Stories is us. But it is not yet an us, Americans have come to recognize as us. There is no us. Irony is a particle accelerator. As an institution, healthcare lumbers along and it has failed us, it does not care. The privileged are fine with that as long as access mainly means them. Obamacare has failed because Medicare does not pay for much. It comes as a shock for a lot of people. It’s not about what it can do. It’s about what it won’t do. If we really want to understand immigration, we need to begin with the history of diaspora. It’s a bigger sweep. The systemic rot of healthcare is the same systemic rot that constitutes the Culture War Politik of resources and where they get go, and to whom. I would not do this surgery. And I would not care who invented it. Some of us feel that health care degrades us, humiliates us, and does not help us. Or it makes everything worse. Machines, aside. Welcome to America. Follow the arrows in the hall to find the Culture War. Or it will find you. Just like the old colonialism will find you stuck in the 19th-Century. Be very careful what you wish for because a diaspora is a cosmic event. Your struggle will be wrapped up in not becoming the people your teachers were. We don’t trust machines. Or doctors. Or culture wars. We only trust ourselves.
