Men On Men: Tim Barrus: NY Times
I don’t get sports. Never have. Never will.
What is it that my masculinity hinges on a stupid game like golf. You follow a little ball around and you hit it. In high school, I was sexually abused in a locker room. I did not go back to that horrid place that was supposed to be the training grounds to prove I was a man. Never have. Never will.
What is wrong with masculinity that finds going after balls so fundamentally imperative. Or the manliest of the manly. Boxing. The beast that suffers from concussion syndrome is the culture sports are carved from.
Little boys playing Look At Me Little Boy Games. Can you put the ball through the hoop. Can you kick it. Can you hit it with a stick. You had better develop these important skills or someone might call you a bad name. I can’t say I never think about that locker room where rape was a silent presence. I can’t say it did not happen. Never have. Never will.
