Quid Pro Quo

Tim Barrus: NYT

Trade wars are not easy to win. Trade wars are easy to lose. Trade wars are easy to lose when one side lies, and cannot be trusted. Bad faith or no faith or faith that is reactive, volatile, capricious, and armed with the pushback of more lies told by the side that is now negotiating while offended. This is now not in any way a negotiation. It is a battle of egos and lies. The very thing Trump does with the consistent gravity that affects everything he touches. America loses again and again. Would you sit down with a man whose only real issue is  self-affirmation. Trump’s style is toxic, and in the wake of the kind of chaos he leaves as a legacy, there is never agreement as to what is up or what is down.
